Family biking across US to oppose sanctions on Cuba

MADISON (WKOW) — A Cuban-American teacher and his family are riding their bicycles across the entire United States.

Carlos Lazo and his family started from their home in Seattle and they’ve already ridden 2,000 miles, stopping in Madison on Sunday.

Their destination is Washington, D.C. where they’re hoping to advocate for lifting economic sanctions with Cuba. Since 1962, the US has had an embargo on trade with Cuba. President Trump issued changes to strengthen the policy towards Cuba in 2017.

“Our effort achieved 20,000 signatures, but the White House never answered us. We decided we are going to go there and we’ll present this petition to the White House. And on the way, we will talk to elected officials and regular folks around the United States,” Lazo said.

Madison has a sister city in Cuba called Camaguey. The Madison Camaguey Association made a donation to Lazo’s effort.
